At Keeper, we’ve always said our job is to make sharper knives for professional chefs. In other words, to build tools that help skilled professionals do their work even better.   We believe AI is a powerful enabler for building more of those tools. It’s another way to get out of spreadsheets and spend more time on client relationships.   Every feature we build, with or without AI, we build with this principle in mind.

Work you already do, made better

Features like AI Journal Entries and AI Bank Feeds help you complete the work you do today, faster. These are not designed to be wholesale replacements for the work an accountant needs to do. They’re designed to take the accountant to the 1 yard line and let them review the work to make sure it’s correct.   Second-level reviews are an important part of accounting, and that hasn’t changed with AI. As anyone who has tried to do real, productive work with these systems can attest, AI can make subtle mistakes, and catching these mistakes before they cause downstream problems requires real expertise.   Imagine grading a difficult math test completed by an AI (something AI can now do well, but not perfectly). If you don’t know math well enough to recognize the right answer, you have no idea if the AI is correct.   And in accounting, it’s kind of important to be correct.

Why we're not building an AI-powered accounting firm:

We think this is a fundamental flaw with firms who are trying to build software to replace accounting firms.   As long as you still have people who need to review the output of the AI, those people are called accountants, you are building an accounting firm, and you have no competitive advantage over other accounting firms.   That doesn’t mean accounting firms won’t benefit from AI. On the contrary: AI will help firms run better businesses. Client satisfaction will improve. Margins will grow. Bandwidth issues will shrink.   That’s why we’re focused on helping firms, not replacing them.   In this sense, AI in Keeper looks a lot like the rest of Keeper. Tools to simplify your workflow, improve your client relationships, and give you better visibility into your firm.   And we’re just getting started.
